"Do people pee in swimming pools?"
I know some of you will out right say no way! I think that would be the natural response of most people. I mean really, who wants to swim in their - and everyone else's urine? I'm sure there are few who are throwing up their hands in urgency to join the club.
But lets all break free of the freezing temperatures most of us are currently experiencing and look forward to the fast approaching summer. Us sitting by the pool. Some with children in tow. Now picture yourself having just gotten in the pool, enjoying the nice cool water and feeling relaxed and then the urge hits. You have to go and have to go bad. You are faced with a dilemma, you can either just swim a really fast lap or splash around with your kids and relieve yourself or drag yourself out of the pool, across the hot searing pavement, into the gross slimy floor bathroom, peel your swim suit off so it's now a rolled up sausage looking thing around your knees, try and wipe yourself with soggy toilet paper, then unroll your sausage swimsuit and have it fit back on your body, walk back across the searing pavement and back into the pool. Really when I put it like that, I don't think there's much debate as to what would be the easier choice. But right choices are not always the easiest.
When I was younger I lived in the pool. My grandparents lived in California and we would go out there every summer for about a month and just swim all day long in their pool. It is a great childhood memory for me. I would have to say that I peed in the pool way more then I went in to use the bathroom. I also swam competitively as a child and would have to say that after weighing the odds the pool always won. I mean isn't that why they chlorinate the pools?
While reflecting on the subject for this post, I began to wonder if professional swimmers pee in the pool. A quick google search revealed that Michael Phelps is an admitted pool pee-er. Look where it got him!!! So look out fellow swimmers, I may not be an Olympic hopeful when I zoom by you for a quick 50 free, but I will feel a lot better when I'm done.
hmm...so while i don't do this in pools, i think i do it in the ocean. the bathrooms are soooo far away from wherever i am that it's not even worth it.
ReplyDeletei think i don't do it in a pool because once i was told that there is some chemical in pool water that turns to foam if you pee in the pool and therefore everyone would know what you did. i've been afraid ever since.
but truth is, i'm not that grossed out because i have to figure that it happens, given all the kids. and yes, that's what the chlorine is for!
lol, ew! I've never peed in a pool, but have to admit to doing it in a large lake or ocean. I do agree that kids probably pee in the pool, which grosses me out about public pools. But since I love going to the pool, I'll probably just shove it to the back of my head and try not to think about it. It hasn't killed me yet, right???
ReplyDeleteSo funny, great topic Meg! I personally am not that great of a swimmer, and actually don't spend all that much time in a swimming pool. I prefer hot tubs, which are much easier and usually quicker to get out of and closer to bathrooms. So I'm not personally a pool pee-er, both because I've also heard the rumor about the special chemical ( but I heard it would leave a trail of bright green instead of foam), and also just haven't had that many opportunities. I am however not grossed out by it though. After watching many episodes of Man Vs. Wild, Bear Grylls DRINKS his pee all the time! For the most part pee is actually quite sterile I think. So even with no chlorine I don't believe it is going to do anything bad, and I'm sure children do it all the time, in pools I have been in, and never have experienced any ill effects! The chlorine content is crazy high in most pools also, so that is also comforting. So if grossness is the determining factor, it is definitely the more logical choice than going ALL THE WAY to the slimy floored bathroom, which grosses me out WAYYYYYYYY more than some sterile pee in a giant pool of water that I can choose not to think about. If there is truly a chemical in there for embarrassment sake, I will probably still avoid it, but let it be said i think it is just fine!
ReplyDeleteI also went a lot as a kid in the pool but don't anymore. My kids, on the other hand, run to the bathroom (way too often in my opinion) to go potty at the pool. In fact, when we were boating this summer, I had to force them to go in the water as we were in the middle of the lake and there was no other option. One of my girls held it forever before she would do it.
ReplyDeleteSo so funny. I'm an admitted lake/ocean pee-er. Try to avoid it in the swimming pool. Not sure what difference it makes. Must be social stigma.
ReplyDeletei've always been a pool-peer. the amount of time i have spent swimming, teaching lessons... it just makes sense to do it. personally, i don't think everyone is being honest here. as for the chemical in the pool... those are expensive for most pools to maintain and they don't use them. so relax ladies and PEE! and to avoid the sausage roll of the swimsuit - just sit down on the toilet and pull it over to one side and go. works like a charm. i even taught it to hannah.
ReplyDeleteThat is hilarious! I actually think the last time I was even in a swimming pool was Dec 2006. And so, my memory on the subject is a little foggy. But I know that at some point I have done it. Thank goodness for chlorine!
